Hey JJ! I've also been bad, feeling guilty everytime I get on the internet if I dont spend the time hunting around the job sites! And as for flouncing, if father dearest would stop treating certain people like they're still a teenager, well nuff said really. Guess we're all glad to have Mum home! Have a temp job now to pass the time at Scottish and Newcastle, the big pub/leisure/beer retailers who have their head offices in Npton. Not bad, relatively good pay but a temp job none the less and as such can't wait to leave! Still, sending off application forms may speed up the process somewhat so guess I ought to be pulling my finger out. Had a surprisingly good night out in Npton at the weekend, still suffering somewhat. Dan (who you've met a few times) lives just down by the cricket ground now and had a party so a whole load from Uni as usual. Went to a bike show the next day. First proper long ride on the back of Will's bike. Very good fun! Other than that my life is really rather boring :) It's not nearly as much fun blogging from home, so little to tell!

Still, should something drastically change in the next few days I'll blog you again soon :)

Hi J

Sorry to leave you all alone in the desert like that. I have had a traumatic fortnight in Pam's absence. There ain't nothing I don't know about house work now. You want sheets changing, towels washing, T shirts ironing, dogs walking, dinners cooking, packed lunches packing, floors hoovered............I'm your man! But somehow I didn't find much time to do anything else - like updating the blog. My apologies. Pam is now home, Denise has been despatched, we've had the first proper balanced meal for along time, Hamish is smiling, Katie has stopped flouncing......in fact the world is getting to rights again.

Spoke to Grandad a couple of days ago. Was really pleased with your recent letter. He (genuinely) remarked on your ability to put a good readable letter together and opined that you should consider working in journalism - which your mother then echoed. So you done right there boy! Tom is pondering your photographic query and will get back to you asap. Pam's face has cleared up entirely but she still gets the odd twinge but that's all. Tom and Melissa saw Fran last Sunday. Not sure of the details but no doubt Tom will fill you in. We were trying to persuade Fran to go to Melanie and Nick's farewell campfest next weekend but for some mysterious reason Fran pleaded a prior engagement. Looks like a lot of family will be there. John and Thelma are going into B&B, Ric and Janet are camping as is Andrew Brocklehurst. Tom, Melissa, Katie. I'm still working on Pam but I suspect we will be there when it comes down to it. Could be another good bash. Tom saw the first lot of your slides at the weekend and says they are very good - so keep on snapping. That's me for the moment but I gather Katie and Tom are likely to be blogging very soon. Meanwhile, run for that truck.

Hi J
the other bit of news is that Katie has come to terms with the rearranged look of her car - has checked she is insured (she is) and it actually started on the third prod - and what's more took Pam, Anna and her to the cinema tonight (the Nick Hornby one with old floppy hair - Anna fell asleep twice!). Hi J

Aren't small sisters a pain in the bum! Grouse like birds are probably a variety of partridege or quail - varieties of both live in high dry places. Big birds high in sky likely to be vultures/lammerguires/eagles sort of bird - falcons are narrow winged and fast flying and you probably get them there as well. Any swallows lower down?

Ornithology over we can now get doen to ordinary stuff. Grandad rang tonight to say (a) he has had the old defibrillator thing done to his heart - and it seems to have worked. Has been told to not get his hopes up until his heart has been running sweetly for six weeks - but it sounds promising -and if it is fixed it means he can come off the rat poison. (b) the exhaust fell off his car on his way to the hospital so Thelma had a happy afternoon getting it fixed while he was convulsed (c) has made his mind up to swap his car and is going for a Peugeot 307 - very snazzy and (d) Naomi has been checking the blog and printed the most recent screed off and posted it to John - so he knows all the exploits (If Namo is reading this "Hi Namo! Thanks for doing that - will give you invite to log on to the blog - although you probably could break in with your pinkie if you wanted to"). Tom tried (again) unsuccesfully (again) to persuade John of the joys of the internet - but he's having none of it - just like me and mobile phones.Assume you have been and seen the Sahara - what's it like (other than sandy)? I suddenly wondered how far away Mali was from you? I assume Timbuktu is in Mali? Think of all that good music! Better publish this before I get wiped off and have to start all over gain. Keep well - mind the bugs don't bite - Pete

Hi J

Just logged on late on Sunday night. What no camels?? Your trip sounds very very good to me.

Domestic news. Pam getting much better - got prescribed the "fast track" drug - so although not quite gone, she is left mainly with a few scabs on her scalp and forehead - very itchy. Katie now home - so our previous calm has evaporated. Very brown but I think glad to be back. Saw Kirsty for the morning before she got picked up. Completely unchanged - it was as though she had never travelled half way across the world for half a year - amazing. Katie completely unchanged likewise. Talked so much on the way back that I missed a turning - something I never normally do on a familiar route - unless Katie is in the car!

Back to your travels. Katie says her silk liner acts as some proof against bed bugs, for what that is worth. What sort of vegetation on the high tops - rock & scree - or anything more lush? Any good birds? Any animal life? Did you solve the map problem or are you doing it all by dead reckoning! It's getting a bit late now- will log on tomorrow - so will be back soon Pete

Hi Katie

Are your flight plans still unchanged? If so see you Manchester 7.40 am ish on Friday. Poor old Pam has got shingles around her right forehead, in her scalp and around her right eye. We thought it was an allergic reaction to an insect bite intially, as did the practice nurse, but a couple of days on antibiotics wasn't touching it so off to the GP - who sent her to the opthalmict A&E clinic there and then with the advice that she ought to pack a bag as she could well be in overnight. Doom !!!. However, she got an immediate diagnosis, has been prescribed the "fast track" cure that John Snr had when Margaret was very ill, and things should be a lot better by the time you get home - meanwhile her poor old right eye is one red blob which she can't open - so we are treating her with loving care.

Spring has really arrived - feels summery - everywhere in flower - trees breaking into leaf - what a great time to come home.
Fancy that being Anne Fine that I met - had I known I would have curtsied - or at least struck a deal with her to visit Tom's shop! Grandad rang - very chuffed with your card from Nepal - will doubtless want to see you once you're settled back home. Precious little else happening - Hamish hunting bees again - life goes on as normal - we are all looking forward to the grand homecoming. You will see from other bits of the blog that Mel and Nick are having a camping weekend in Beddgelert in May as their parting family "do". I've invited them to join the blog - not sure if they have yet - but Ange has - so if you want to find out more lob your questions in that direction.

Thats it for now - see you very soon - Pete xxxxxxxx

Hi J John snr got your letter from Tangiers - very appreciative - thought you were doing exactly the right thing with your PJD's £1000 - " that's just the sort of thing I hoped people would do with it". How far have you got? Found a good camel in the small ads yet?. Your claim form despatched a promised. Only interesting mail that has arrived turned out to be your final salary slip and P45 form Space Place. So your free!!!

Keep in touch when you get chance. All those small Berber villages in the High Atlas are bounfd to have internet connections surely.......Pete x

Hi Angieroo!

Tom has just been talking to Melanie on the phone tonight (Thu). Gather Mel is organising a family camping shindig in a field somewhere in Beddgelert w/e of 25 May !. Someone ought to her tell her that the only thing that comes out of Beddgelert is slate and the only thing that goes in, is rain! Have to assume this is part of her advanced acclimatisation programme for the wetter bits of South Island. The real question Ange, is whether or not you are going to be camping there - in the midges - in the rain - in a small tent when home is beckoning only twenty miles away?? We demand an answer! Looks as though we are free that weekend (assuming the lost generation are invited - my bet is we will be provided we buy the beer) but haven't even thought about mentioning it to Pam yet. Softly softly catchee monkey.

It was good to see you last weekend - can only guess which bit of the UK you are reading this. Keep in touch

Pete

PS It looks as though Ric has logged on but I'm not sure if he is visiting the blog.

Katie The thing I meant to tell you about was that on Saturday morning a rather well spoken woman came on the phone wanting to speak to you. (I thought it was probably an employment agency offering you a full days work on silver service - get yourself there, provide your own uniform and "PS We don't pay overtime" sort of deal) but it turned out to be one of Will's aunties. She was at Will's Grandma's house and saw this black travel bag - asked Grandma whose it was and Grandma hadn't a clue - guessed it belonged to her son-in law who was doing some work in her house and thought it was his tools! Intrepid Auntie looks in bag and works out that it was all travel stuff and - this is where I'm guessing a bit - discovers someting of Kirsty's with her parents' phone number - rings them - they get anxious (as ever) - and then (and I'm not sure how they made this connection) rang us. The upshot being that I popped over to Hardinstone - met Auntie and Grandma - and now have one travel bag with a green fleece on top. Haven't delved into it but assume the films you talked about are in there (plus Anna's present?). Do you want them developed before you get home - or at least so they are ready when you get home? Don't know whether the Auntie was anne Fine or not - she had fair straight hair - and a fancy 4x4 outside.

That's it for now love again P xx

Saw John off yesterday morning with Fran from E Midlands. Dropped Fran off at the station on return because she had to get back to pack in order to get to Cadenet the next day. John hoped to be in Tarifa (Spain) on Monday night and heading towards Marrakesh today (Tuesday). We had a good pig-out for J's birthday - wine was drunk - roast pork - parsnips - roast potatoes - Pavlova - lots of cheese (hope you are reading all this Katie!). The Ange dropped in at about 10.30 pm - because he was staying with us for sunday and monday night - all very complicated - but now everyone has gone and Pam has had a good quiet day in her garden - I've had a happy day printing a newsletter - the sun has shone yet again (London - 26 days without rain - we must be much the same) - and I got voted onto the cabinet again - so everything is Rosy!!

Ange says Mel and Nick have bought their ticket now - going via San Francisco - setting off in May - but Ange couldn't emeber the date.. Doing a fair bit of walking/visiting on the west coast - walking some/all of the John Muir Trail - going to Monument Valley and Grand Canyon (but can't remember whether they are trecking there or just visiting). After all that they are going on to NZ via Christmas Islands.

Where are you Katie? Seen a tiger yet? More interestingly, has a tiger seen you? How's the Taj Mahal? Pam thinks it has got scaffolding up it at the moment and Tom thinks they have put the entrance price up high. Unlike them I don't have a view about these exotic places so will wait until I hear news from the true source ie someone who has actually been there! How's Kirsty's tum - is she nice to be near?? Give her our love. Realise you will be home very soon. Am starting to get out the road map to find out where Manchester is - so see you very soon - Love Pete xxxxxxxx

Hi K

Hadn't realised what a long time it has been since I last logged on. Where have we been, what have we been doing? Not quite sure really but we seem to have been very busy. Had a great few days in France - clear blue skies - lots of hacking and burning - emptied a fair bit of the barn - talked to the little kids from down the road - got the water on etc etc. we stayed in a hotel in Gueret and travelled out each day. Were meant to have taken Ric with us but he cried off half an hour before we set off (we think Janet laid down the law!). Driving on French motorways is smashing so it takes about 6/7 hours smooth driving to get there from Calais - so not bad.

Pam has been deep into her garden at every opportunity - along with her attentive assistant digger! Everything is early this year - we seem to have had clear cool sunny dry days for about three weeks now. Eating asparagus already!

Council work seems to be sucking me in. We are all up for re-selection this coming week. I''ve been tipped of that I will still be in cabinet but not counting any chickens yet.

This is alll reading as pretty boring stuff compared to what you have been doing. What will/did Kirsty do in Katmandu on her own while you were canoeing? Are you getting to the point where you have exhausted each others company or is this just a natural break? What have you been doing about photos - are you lugging round lots of used film or have you posted it off? What are you going to do /go to in India? How did you persuade Kirsty to go independantly on the annapurna trek against her dad's advice? Brave stuff heh?

Questions, questions, questions!!

We are just adjusting to the idea that you will be home quite soon - we wonder how you will adjust to it all again. Still, one small woolly creature will be very pleased to see you - not to mention the rest of us.

I've suddenly found myself with sciatica for the first time ever - it's like a trapped nerve deep in your bum and the pain goes down one leg - so I'm sitting on one side of my bum as I tap this out and getting to the point where i will need to stretch my leg. They all say it will go soon - so here's hoping. am just about to Hamey down the garden for al ast minute wee - on his lead because otherwise he doesn't want to come in again and tries to play catch-up in the flowerbeds - which fails to impress your mother more than somewhat.

So logging off now - but will do some more soon.

Lots of love Pete xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi J Brave move. If she doesn't want to lose staff all she has to do is to offer them some real incentive to stay I suspect. When do you plan to go to Morocco? Any chance of us seeing you before you go? Do you think you will actually go back to your Hackney flat? If you weren't I know Melissa is loooking for something soon as she has to beout of her place injune(?) I think - but you are probably more up to date with her moves than us as i suspect you have seen her more recently.
We're off to Halwhistle midday Friday 8 March - spare seat - you don't fancy coming?

Hi K

Tom says casually that I'm riding the tandem home - but I've never ridden one before - I've not even seen it yet - and it is right at the top of Eastern Avenue - so you will be able to visualise me riding a tandem solo at breakneck speed down that hill. Boinggggggggg!! It sounds good fun though.I just happened to see the ad a couple of days after Anna's great experiment and left Tom to do the purchasing. We forget that dear old Anna has never had the experience of whizzing along on a bike before - (except for that shortlived and not to be repeated experiment when she rode side saddle on the carrier on the back of my Dutch bike - only for me to find I was going faster and to turn round and see Anna lying on the tarmac.)

We are already for Spain on Sunday morning (well Pam is and I'm not - the usual story) and have now booked a five day trip to Gueret for the week before Easter - so the little French house will start to make progress. We're going up to Grandad and Thelma's in a couple of weekends' time and he has got a lot of spare tools which we are going to take ovr as well.

So no news from us next week I'm afraid. tom will still be here but Hamish will be having his hols in the Kennels and Anna will be staying at Quarry House. No more news I'm afraid. Byeeeee love Pete xxxxxxx

K What you mean - "you're coming back" ? That wasn't part of the deal. We've rented out your room and sold off your junk. Keep paddling that sampan my girl. On a more practical note, yes of course she can - I think we had rather assumed she would anyway.

Do they still have French as their second language? Yes Pam got her letter. wouldn't let the rest of us read it - said it was "hers" ! Will try to get Pam on again but if you take too long typing on bloggger you finds it has logged you off and you have to start all over again so I think we will do it in word and then paste when we are ready. Hi Kate + all other viewers (Hi J)

The winner was Will . ( says Anna). Saw Lord of the Rings last night - won't tell you about it until you have had a chance to see it (in vietnamese?) - but you get your monies worth at three and a half hours long. Been in Council all day - seat numb from sitting on hard old chairs - now sitting on a soft old chair all evening peering into a computer screen. Vietnam sounds just as I have imagined it. I really like the idea of cycling - will work on Pam. How is Kirsty these days - loosening up a bit - or still bed and a book at 9.00 pm?

Haven't seen Ocean 11yet, but it's on the list - just got to our cinema. That's it for now. P xxx

Hi K

Since I last wrote still nothing has happened! I'm going paunchy so have adopted a(nother) healthy eating regime and I am RAVENOUS. Dear God bring me my dinner NOW!!! Still we're going to see Lord of the Rings tonight so that should be interesting.

GENERAL NEWS for anyone who is reading this. John Snr rang me to say that - this bit gets convoluted - that tHelma has a friend in Carlisle who is either French or her husband is - no matter - they have a son who is a builder cum handyman - and guess what - he lives in the Gueret area. John's question was would we mind if Thelma got in touch with him, if only to seek advice from him and to find out a bit more of what he does? I said "yes". Can't do any harm and could, depending on what he actually does, be vey helpful. P

Hi K Since I last wrote nothing has happened - except the car failed its MoT - and I've got to take it back all the way to Wellingborough when they have got the bits. When I took it the first time I did my usual trick of sticking my bike in the boot and cycling home. It was a beautiful crisp day but I must be getting old - the first hill buggered me. Had to get off and pretend I needed to blow my nose.

Forgot to tell you that when Ric was here last weekend he told us how Richard (Bloggsy to you and me) has had to give up working on the buses - I think I knew that already - but that he has got his own single-decker bus (or coach? - I'm not sure) sitting on a bit of spare ground near his house and, even better, he's got an ALLOTMENT. "Way to go Bloggsy!"

We're looking forward to our week in Spain - Pam keeps reading yesterdays weather reports for Malaga - "Oh its 3 degrees now and raining - it's definitely getting warmer" that sort of thing and trying to persuade me to get interested in what clothes I should take - and heaven forbid - which suitcase I want. "What's wrong with the night before" says I - "it's always worked OK up till now". This does not go down well.

Your smallest friend has been helping Pam in the garden, while Anna and I went to choose a small tin of bright red paint to adorn the front door of her doll's house. You can guess who will end up doing the painting.

Hamish has asked me to warn you against eating puppy meat - he's joined a terrier self help group after reading about far eastern delicacies in a recent Guardian travel supplement.

That's it for now Keep in touch love P xxxxxxxxx

Hi J

Good to see you blogging.

Hi K

Let us know if you want us to register you on blogger - any particular password? Let me know by email. Nanky got her post card from Kuala Lumpur - very pleased. Went to show her where it was on the map but can't find the atlas - so where is it in relation to Singapore? I'm guessing northish, but not sure.

Pam very taken with idea of Vietnam. W saw "Apocalypse Now - Redux" recently. Have you seen that, or the original film? If not, a must. It's all set in Vietnam in breathtaking up-country scenery. Can you see any evidence of the War or has it (literally) all grown over now? Went to Brackley to see Tom's shop this morning. Lots of rooms, lots of books, lots of potential. Books everywhere - almost too much stock - can't see the wood from the trees. Your mother, true to her mother, said "The first thing this shop needs is a good clean!". But Tom has PLANS but is sensibly playing a softly softly game. He must be fed up with us. we have already written at least half a dozen business trategies for him in our minds eye. We will have to learn to shut up. Just like Hamish, who thinks he can hear a cat outside, and is bawling his head off (it's 10.55). Oops, Pam has just come down in her dressing gown and is bawling at me to do do something with him. Must go!!! Love P xxxxxxxxx

Previous wekend Tom, Melissas and went to Ange and Cath's for a weekend on the hills - in Tom's car. Quite strange sitting as a back seat passenger. It has been raining a lot inthe UK - lots of rivers on flood alert - and the mountains were awash. went to the Aber falls and they were a like a foaming water shute - spectacular - Tom took photos - will have to see if they came out.

Talking of photos - thanks for the two snaps - you both look very well - and happy new year to you as well !

Got otlog off now at 11.35 pm on cold wet Wedneday night. Your quiz question for the night is "what did Anna eat for second course at her Allsorts Club tonight" It's nothing chocolate she says, we've tried Ice Cream, Steamed sponge pudding, apple tart, apple pie - but all to no avail. First correct answer wins a fabulous prize!

Keep in touch (says he cheekily) love P xxxxxxxx

PS we're going to see Tom's shop tomorrow - that will embarass him!

Theother interesting news is that Ange and Cath and Ric and Janet and Pam and I all met last weekend at our house to have a grand Sunday morning conference on how to progress the French house. It had all the ingredients for a major family rift but it went very well. Agreement reached. Ric has produced a very neat CAD set of drawings. Ange turned up with a scaled model of the house made from paper - which Hamish has since started to eat - which was very helpful. pam and i are planning going to France the week before Easter to start the grand clean out and to try to get soem emulsoion on the walls. (we even managed to agree a colour in a morning - an event that takes months in our household - and judging by Janet's remarks - even longer in their household.

Katie

Just put a great long screed down only for blogger to tell me it had timed out and I have had to start all over again! Sorry for the long silence from this end. Bit busy what with one thing and another. Re Shamal, the reason we didn't tell you was becuase we hadn't heard either. John Snr. rang 25 Jan to ask how to cook his haggisand apparently meant to tell us then - but forgot - then swore blind he had told us - and then remebered that he hadn't after all - by which time we had just heard it from someone else - but I can't remeber who (have you got all that?). Anyway....... that's why we didn't tell you. How did you hear?
